How to Buy DVK for Devikins

I’m a member of both the official Telegram and Discord channels for Devikins and one thing that gets repeatedly asked is “How to buy DVK?”.

In an effort to help future Devikins players, I’m creating this quick guide covering the steps on how to buy DVK for Devikins. I’ve also included a short FAQ section featuring the most oft-asked stuff in the Devikins Discord and TG channels.

What is DVK?

In Devikins, DVK (Devicoin) is used as the primary currency. Devicoins are a form of crypto currency that can be traded with other cryptocurrencies in the real world and can eventually be exchanged for traditional money.

Once the game is launched, you can acquire DVK through the following methods:

  • Playing Devikins and fulfilling in-game missions

  • Earning in the Weekly League competition

  • Earning by completing Scavenger Missions

  • Exchanging them in Crypto Exchanges

  • Selling Devikins NFT in the marketplace

  • Staking them with initial 16% APR

When will Devikins NFTs be released?

The initial release date is September 7th 2021, 3PM UTC (11PM in Manila).

Where can I buy Devikins NFT?

Visit and there will be a dedicated web shop on the website. You will have to link a Tron wallet using a browser extension so you can purchase using your DVK tokens. 

Alternatively, if you have a Klever wallet, you can use its built-in browser and launch It will automatically link your Klever wallet into the Devikins website.

What do I need to purchase Devikins NFTs?

You need to have DVK tokens to buy Devikins NFTs. As of the moment, DVK is only available via Klever Exchange and Klever Wallet. It’s not available via Metamask, Pancakeswap, or Binance (and other similar platforms).

Steps on How to Buy DVK Tokens for Devikins

  1. Install Klever Exchange or Klever Wallet on your Android mobile device. For iOS users, get it from the App Store. Here’s a YT guide for installing Klever and creating an account.

  1. You need to fund your Klever Exchange or Klever Wallet with TRX. You do this by transferring funds from platforms like Binance, CoinBase, Gate.IO, and others. Check out the video below (skip to time stamp 1:35) for a guide on how to deposit cryptocurrency into your Klever wallet.

3. Once you have TRX funds in your Klever wallet, it’s time to swap it to KLV. 

4. In the Klever Wallet app, click the Swap button at the bottom. In the Swap section, search for TRX and KLV (see image above). This action will let you swap a specific number of TRX tokens you want to change to DVK.  Click the 100% option if you want to change all of it to DVK. Convert it to 100% only if you will be transferring TRX balance later for your gas fees. Otherwise, leave at least 20 TRX for gas fees. You’ll need it when purchasing Devikins NFTs.

5. Once the swap is complete, you should now be able to see the DVK token balance in your wallet.

Is there a limit on how many Devikins I can buy?

No, you can buy as many as you want. There is no whitelisting needed too. Simply connect your wallet via the methods mentioned above and buy using the steps shown. You can buy Devikins NFT in packs of 1, 4, or 10. You pay gas fees per pack you buy.

You won’t need a “Devikins account” to buy NFTs or play the game. You just connect your TRX wallet or Klever Wallet (launch the built-in browser then connect to the Devikins website). From there you can start buying Devikins.  

If you bought DVK from Klever Exchange, make sure to send it to your Klever Wallet (or TRX wallet that’s not from a CEX) first because you can’t purchase Devikins NFTs from Klever Exchange.

How much is the price of a Devikins NFT? 

As quoted in the Devikins TG channel: 

“It depends on the circulating supply. The more NFTs, the more expensive they are. The starting price is 3 USD in DVK. So, if DVK is $0.01, NFT at start price is 300 DVK, if DVK is $0.015, NFT at start price is 200 DVK. So, if DVK is $1, I will pay only 3 DVK at the start price.”

At what stage does the NFT come? 

Embryo. In the game, a Devikin goes through three stages of development. Embryo, Toddler, and Adult.

Do I know all my NFT attributes and genes if my NFT is in the Embryo Stage? 

Yes, the web viewer always shows the NFT on the Adult stage with information on gene rarity, affinity values, personality, and base attributes even though it is at the Embryo Stage.

Devikins Soft Mint and Hard Mint Explained 

Devikin minting begins with Soft Mint. In this step, Devikin is still stored in the game server and linked to the owner's wallet, but it has not yet been added to Tron's blockchain. Therefore, no gas fees are charged at this point. 

When a Soft Mint is created, NFTs can't be transferred to another wallet, they can't be sold on the market, nor can they be imported by third party platforms.

Minting an NFT on the Tron blockchain is called Hard Minting.

An NFT that has been hard minted is transferable between Tron wallets and can be sold on the Tron marketplace, but has a gas fee associated with it. 

Soft Mint can be considered as a prerequisite of Hard Mint. To get hard mint your Devikins NFT, you first must have it go through the Soft Mint stage. All NFT start in the Soft Mint stage. You can then pick a Soft Mint and lock it into a Hard Mint status by paying a fee.

Can I buy hard minted NFTs?

Not directly from the Devikins shop. You can buy hard-minted NFTs in the marketplace. 

What's the difference between the Shop and Marketplace?

Shop is where you can buy randomly generated (you can’t determine its rarity or visuals before buying it) NFTs in Soft Mint state. 

The Marketplace is where you can buy Hard Minted NFTs from other players. It is a P2P market. Since it's hard-minted already, you can see its rarity and visuals before buying it.

What can I do with my soft-minted Devikins NFT?

You can do 4 things with your soft-minted Devikins NFTs:

  • View their attributes in the webviewer

  • Share the web viewer link with friends and social media 

  • Burn 4 soft minted NFTs to cycle for another randomly generated soft minted NFT 

  • Pay a fee to turn it into a hard minted NFT

What can I do with my hard-minted Devikins NFT?

You can do 5 things with your hard-minted Devikins NFTs:

  • Check their attributes in the webviewer

  • Share the web viewer link with friends and social media

  • Transfer it to another TRX wallet 

  • Post it for sale in the marketplace (when the marketplace goes live) 

  • Use it in the game (when the game gets released)

How do I turn my Devikins Soft Mint into Hard Mint?

There is a web inventory section inside the devikins website. After connecting your wallet,  all soft and hard minted NFTs you own will be displayed. You can then view your options here for morphing your Devkins NFTs from Soft to Hard Mint.

I heard I need 18 NFTs to fully promote a single Devikin, what does that mean? 

Promotions apply to adult Devikins. Once in the Adult Phase, Devikins are immediately promoted to level 1. They can continue leveling all the way to a maximum of 10, and after they reach level 10, you can burn 1 NFT to promote it, making the maximum level 20. This follows until promotion level 10, where the max level is 100. Burn progression between promotions is, 1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 3, 3, 3 - thus 18 NFTs.

Does the burned NFT have any requirement? 

Yes, you can only burn hard minted Adult NFTs to promote another Devikin.

Can an NFT change its attributes after Soft Mint? 

No. Genes, Affinities, and Personality cannot be changed. Only the Life Stage can be changed inside the Devikins game.

Can I pick which rarity I want to buy in the Shop? 

No, you can’t. It is randomly generated.

Can I procreate when NFTs release?

No, you need the Devikins game to be launched first before you can procreate.

When I burn 4 NFTs to cycle a new one, is it guaranteed to get a better one? 

No, it is possible to get a better one but it is not guaranteed.

After I Hard Mint an NFT, can I turn it into Soft Mint again? 

No, changing from Soft to Hard Mint is an irreversible process. Once you hard-mint your NFT, you can’t change it back to soft-mint.

Can I send my Devikin Hard Mint NFTs to Metamask? 

No, you cannot. Devikin NFT is a TRC721 token.

Where will the DVK I use to buy NFT go? 

To the Devikins team.

Can I see my NFTs inside the Klever Wallet? 

At this moment, you can see them using the Klever Browser (Inside Klever Wallet) or any other dapp browser in the web inventory.

In the web inventory can I see both Soft and Hard Mint NFTs linked to my wallet? 

Yes, the game’s web inventory will showcase both your soft and hard mint collection.

How to Play Devikins – A Quick Guide

What is Devikins?

Devikins is a blockchain game for mobile devices (iOS and Android). It’s an RPG-style game with some mixed gameplay elements from Tamagotchi.

How to Buy Devikins NFT (via Klever Wallet)

The following instructions are for those who have already bought DVK tokens via Klever Exchange or Klever Wallet. If you don't know how to install a Klever Wallet and buy Devikins tokens, check out this article: How to Buy DVK

Note: The following screenshots were accessed via Klever Wallet browser hours prior the actual sale of the Devikins NFT (Sept 7th).

1. Open your Klever Wallet.

2. From the main screen, click the Browser icon at the bottom. Enter "" in the address bar. Press Enter.

3. You will be redirected to the Devikins Shop page. Click the 3 horizontal lines at the upper right corner of the screen. A pop-up from the left will appear. Choose the option, "Connect Wallet".

4. You'll be redirected to a page where you need to select the blockchain account you want to use. For our purposes, select the TRX account. You should now see the Shop and Inventory options in the left side when you click the 3 lines (Menu button) on the upper right side.

5. Clicking the Shop button will lead you to the page where you can purchase the Devikins NFT. You can choose from packs of Basic (1 NFT), Team (4 NFTs), and Collectors (10 NFTs).

When can I play Devikins?

Devikins is currently under development. The Phase 1 of Devikins is scheduled to launch in December 2021.

What's Phase 1?

Phase 1 will cover Tamagotchi-inspired gameplay.

The combat gameplay for Phase 1 is scheduled to be released on Q3 2022.

How much does it cost to play the game?

No DVK needed to play the game, but you will need DVK if you want to evolve your account. You need Devikins NFT characters to play the game at its fullest.

How many Devikins NFT do I need to play?

Tamagotchi gameplay requires 1 Devikins NFT, but you can play on this game mode with as many NFT you would like. For combat, current design has team composed of 4 Devikins NFT. The devs mentioned that this number can still change in the future so nothing is final yet.

What is DVK?

Devicoin (DVK) is a utility token used as the main currency of Devikins. Devicoins are a crypto currency that may be exchanged with other crypto-currencies in the real world and eventually be exchanged using fiat currency.

Where can I get DVK today?

At the moment, it is available on Klever Wallet via swap (KLV-DVK, and USDT-DVK). It is also available at Klever Exchange. Klever Exchange can be downloaded from Playstore for Android users. For iOS users, you can join the open beta here:

No, there’s no limit. You can buy as much Devikin NFTs as you would like.

I just found out about the game, is there any DVK coin event to look forward to still?

No, both the Private sale and Initial Mining Event are completed. You can only purchase DVK token from the Market from now on.

Can I use Meta mask for Devikins?

No, Metamask is currently not supported. You can only use Klever Wallet or Klever Exchange to get DVK tokens.

When will DVK be listed CMC and Coingecko?

As of the moment, these sites have some requirements for it to be listed, which DVK haven’t met yet (as of August 2021).

How to Get NAPANAM QR Code: A Step-by-Step Guide

All individuals entering the Province and any establishment in La Union will be required to use a NAPANAM QR Code. It's a part of the latest travel requirements of the province. This article will show you how to get your NAPANAM QR Code and how to verify it.

NAPANAM QR Code Definition

The Province of La Union has a centralized Covid-19 tracking system that uses barcodes to track contact listings and places visited. It's called the NAPANAM QR Code.

It's called NAPANAM because "napanam" is an Ilocano expression that means, "Where have you been?"

As stated in Ordinance No. 289-2021. "Imposing Mandatory Compliance with Minimum Public Health Standards in the Province of La Union".

Micro establishments that don't have the capacity to install and use the system will need to provide a logbook for their clients.

No individual will be allowed into any establishment or provided service if he/she doesn't have aQR code.

The following locations within the Province of La Union are required to have a NAPANAM QR Code: Agoo, Aringay, Bacnotan, Bagulin, Balaoan, Bangar, Bauang, Burgos, Caba, Luna, Naguilian, Pugo, Rosario, San Fernando City, San Gabriel, San Juan, Santo Tomas, Santol, Sudipen, and Tubao.

Where I can download or generate a NAPANAM QR Code?

Downloading the NAPANAM QR Code is fairly easy. Here are the steps.

1. Visit the official NAPANAM La Union Contract Tracer website. You can use a computer or your mobile device.

2. On the right side, pick the option that best fits the reason why you need a NAPANAM QR Code. You will get a pop-up warning window, just click OK since this is just a reminder that you can only register once and should wait for the verification.

  • For individuals who wish to have a NAPANAM QR ID (Register or Check Status)

    b. For Inbound or Outbound travel (Register New Travel or Manage Travels)

    c. For Establishments to be registered as QR Scanning point.

If you select "Individual QR Pass", you'll be asked to choose from the following sub-options:

- Resident and currently in La Union
- Returning resident of La Union
- Non-resident WITH OFFICIAL-Business in La Union
- Non-resident WITH PERSONAL PURPOSES in La Union

What are the requirements to get a NAPANAM QR Code?

You'll only need to provide your mobile number and email address. During the registration process, you'll also be required to provide your personal information and the name of a contact person. For the verification process, you'll be asked to send copies of a valid government-issued ID and a selfie of yourself holding the ID.

Why do we need to use NAPANAM QR Code?

You need to obtain a NAPANAM QR Code because that will serve as proof that you are cleared to go in and out of the province. If you're a tourist visiting San Juan, for example, you might be asked at border checkpoint or border control to show your NAPANAM QR Code along with your Tourist Access Pass from TOSS.

Business closures happen for different reasons — but no matter what caused the business to close, it's important to understand that you can't simply stop operating.

As a business owner or self-employed individual running a freelance business, it's your duty to perform the due diligence required to properly close the business. Your business registration needs to be officially recognized as void, otherwise, you risk facing serious legal and tax consequences.

This article is a guide on how to close a business in the Philippines. You'll learn about the most important elements that make up a proper closure of business. It Includes the steps, time frame, and procedures to ensure a trouble-free closure of business.

Note: If you hired an accountant to file your taxes, it is best to consult with them first for guidance.

What is Closure of Business?

A business closure is the result of a company or organization shutting down or ceasing to operate. It's also sometimes referred to as "retiring a business".

It essentially terminates the legal existence of the business by informing a few key government agencies and local units by submitting all required documentation (and paying all applicable fees)  By doing so, you can free the business from any further tax obligations.

Why is it important to properly close a business?

As the registered owner, if you fail to close your business properly, you could face a number of legal issues and tax liabilities.

As mentioned earlier, you can't simply stop operating. If your business is still registered, your business is still operational in the eyes of the law. 

When closing down your company, consulting services can prove helpful, but entrepreneurs need to be aware of things they should and should not do.

This includes properly informing both employees and suppliers/partners about their intentions so that any outstanding dues can be settled and other obligations fulfilled before the company is deemed as officially closed. 

Here are the possible penalties for failing to close a business:

  • Criminal and civil penalties (tax audit issues)

  • Compromise penalties stemming from open cases

  • Fees and other penalties from the LGU

How long does it take to close a business?

In the Philippines, the complete process can take anywhere from a few months to a year, possibly even more, depending on the situation. 

If you have any outstanding issues (missed BIR filings, for example), expect it to take more time simply because the government needs to review and settle them all before your business can be officially recognized as non-operational.

What type of business do you have?

Before you proceed with the steps, it's important to note that the actual process may vary depending on the type of business classification you have. 

For sole proprietorship:

For freelancers, self-employed individuals, freelance business owners, and similar groups,  the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) needs to be notified of your decision to cancel. 

For partnerships and corporations:

For businesses, organizations, and cooperatives, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) must be notified of your cancellation of business.

Steps to properly close a business in the Philippines

There are several steps required to start the process of business closure in the Philippines. Here’s a bird’s eye view of the steps for each corresponding regulatory agency/government unit. Note that you may or may not need to visit each entity, that depends on the type of business you have (as explained in the previous section). 

Business closure at the Barangay and LGU level

Before you visit the barangay, make sure to bring all the requirements mentioned below along with some money to pay for any fees.

List of Requirements for business closure at the barangay:

  • Letter Request for Retirement of Business

  • Original copy of Latest Business Permit

  • Valid ID

  • For Single Proprietorship:

    • Original copy of Affidavit of Closure bearing exact date the business was closed

  • For Partnership:

    • Original Partnership Dissolution document bearing exact date of business closure signed by all partners

  • For Corporation:

    • Original Secretary's Certificate or Board Resolution on closure or transfer of the business bearing the exact date of closure.

Steps for business closure at the Barangay:

Go to the Barangay hall to request a Barangay Certificate bearing the exact effective date of closure. You must submit a Letter of Request for Retirement in order to obtain the retirement certificate. In addition, you will be provided with a Barangay Clearance / Certificate of Closure.

One of the first documents that you’ll be asked to provide in requesting for a cessation of your business is an Affidavit of Business Closure. To give you an idea of what it looks like and what it contains, here’s a sample:

Steps for Business Closure at the City Hall

Business owners who want to avoid getting assessed further taxes while their business is closed must file for Closure of Business and Cancellation of TIN with the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR). All business notices and corresponding permits need to be surrendered. You might also be required to submit an affidavit of loss if the business name certificate or a copy of the original application form was lost.

Note: Steps may vary depending on your business location. The following are the steps to close a business in Quezon City (QC LGU).

For businesses established in Quezon City, the City Treasury Department - Examination Division must be contacted to declare a business closed.

Steps for Closure at the City Hall

  1. Notice of intent to close business addressed to the City Treasurer and copies forwarded to the Department of Business Permits and Licensing

  2. Original copies of Tax Bills and Receipts

  3. Original copy of Latest Business Permit

    1. If Single Proprietorship, original Affidavit of Closure with exact date of closure.

    2. If Partnership, original partnership dissolution with exact effectivity date of closure signed by all partners.

    3. If Corporation, original Secretary’s Certificate or Board Resolution on closure or transfer of business with exact date of closure.

  4. Valid ID

  5. Barangay Certificate (the clearance which you obtained from the first section)

  6. BIR Certificate of Registration

  7. Book of Accounts, business plate, income tax returns

  8. VAT Returns or Percentage Tax Returns

Steps for BIR Business Closure

According to the BIR, "taxpayers who filed for cancellation of registration due to closure/cessation of business or termination of business shall be subjected to immediate investigation by the BIR office concerned to determine the taxpayer's liabilities".

1. Visit the nearest BIR office to apply for Closure of Business and Cancellation of TIN along with the following list of requirements and/or documents:

  • Closure Notice / Cessation of Business / Notice of Closure

  • All business permits and notices and COR

  • Unused sales invoices and official receipts (delivery receipts, purchase orders, credit memos, etc.,)

  • Tax returns or other related business documents (books of accounts, etc.,)

General Steps:

  • Taxpayers must file Form 1905, together with the attachments, with the Revenue District Office (RDO) within ten (10) days after the business ceases operations.

  • Income tax return for a short period is filed by the taxpayer.

  • Using the Integrated Tax System (ITS), the RDO determines whether taxpayers have open cases. If there's any, the taxpayer will be required to submit the returns and to pay any corresponding tax due as well as any penalties.

  • Taxpayers' delinquent cases are verified through the Assessment, Collection, and Legal Divisions of the Region. Same will be done in the  Collection Enforcement Division, BIR National Office.

  • Before ceasing to do business, RDO requests a Letter of Authority to investigate all unaudited taxable years.

  • A Case Officer assigned to the case will conduct investigations for the period/s covered in the Letter of Authority.

  • Form 0605 is used to pay corresponding deficiency taxes resulting from an audit by the taxpayer.

  • Business closure is approved by the RDO.

  • RDO updates ITS and cancels TIN of taxpayer for non-individual taxpayer.

Steps for Application for Closure at DTI and SEC

If your business type is a partnership or a corporation, the last step is to submit your intent to stop your business operation.

Business closure requirements of DTI for Sole Proprietors:

  • A completed and signed Other BN-Related Application Form specified in Annex D must be submitted;

  • The owner of the BN must present one (1) valid ID according to Annex A;

A Pinoy's Quick Guide to Mobile Phone Numbers 

There are currently four major mobile operators in the country – Globe Telecom Inc., PLDT Incorporated, Smart Communications Corporation, and DITO Telecommunity. The other mobile network providers include TM, TNT, Cherry Prepaid, and ABS-CBN Mobile. Each company operates its own mobile service under different brands but all use GSM technology.

There are two types of mobile number prefixes - national and regional. National prefixes cover all areas while regional prefixes cover only specific regions.

In addition, there are also some special mobile networks that have been created specifically for certain purposes like emergency calls and government agencies. These include 999, 911 and 112.

A mobile number prefix represents the first four digits of the 11-digit mobile number. A prefix identifies to which mobile network a particular number belongs, e.g. Smart, Globe, Sun Cellular, or DITO. 

For example, the mobile phone number 09457734633 has a phone number prefix of 0945---it's under Globe Telecom's network.

This knowledge is handy since it allows you to avoid paying extra charges from calling a mobile phone number under a different network, thus letting you maximize the call and text promos under your preferred network. 

Additionally, if I am roaming abroad, say in Europe, then knowing my local mobile operator can help me get better rates on calls and data usage. Knowing your own carrier allows you to avoid being charged extra fees when making international calls. It helps you save money by avoiding long distance charges.

How long are the teaching sessions at Weblio?

The duration of tutorial lessons at Weblio are as follows: 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, and 55 minutes. Weblio uses its own teaching platform, WebRTC, to conduct lessons. You don't need to open a certain number of lesson slots everyday to be considered as an active tutor. However, you shouldn't be inactive for two consecutive months otherwise Weblio will delete your profile. 

What computer specs do I need for Weblio?

There has been no specific PC/laptop brand or specs mentioned in Weblio's official website. However, the programs required for online ESL tutoring in general are not demanding in terms of computer power. As a tip though, try to use a PC/laptop with at least 8GB of RAM for a smoother experience.

How to apply at Weblio

To apply to become a Weblio English tutor, all you'll have to do is complete their online application form on their website. You must then pass through a series of tests before being accepted into the program.  

Step 1 - Application

Visit the official WeblioPH website. Fill out all of the required fields on the application form. You'll be asked to provide your personal information, educational background, work experience, and most available time to teach.

Step 2 - Grammar Exam

Once you've filled out the application form, click "Submit" button. Once done, you will need to pass the 40-item Grammar Exam. You need to get a score of at least 90% to pass. You can retake the test in case you don't meet the required score. If you pass, the recruitment team will send a confirmation to your email address.

Step 3 - Test Call & Interview

In this stage, your equipment and internet connection speed will be tested. They do this to determine the call quality and overall capability of your computer and internet connectivity.

Step 4 - Training

If you pass all 3 prior steps, you'll undergo Weblio's 3-Part New Tutor's Workshop. This is done to ensure that you have the necessary skills and knowledge to teach English online using the Weblio method.

Step 5 - Demo

This part of the application process will test what you've learned in the training phase. You will be tasked to conduct a demo tutorial session with real students. To begin, you'll be asked to plot a schedule in the Calendly app.

Step 6 - Tutor Release

Qualified applicants (for those who passed all 5 previous steps) will be asked to submit requirements and their signed Tutor Service Contract. Once done, thy can now begin teaching English online to actual students.

How long is Weblio's application process?

It usually takes a tutor applicant between 2 and 2 weeks to complete the entire application process, depending on his or her availability and response to the requirements.

Is there a contract in Weblio?

Tutors at Weblio are considered independent contractors. 

How will I receive my payment?

Tutor fees are sent via BDO savings, BPI savings, or BDO payroll (Weblio helps with this). Note that BPI Family Savings is not allowed. If you don't have a BDO account, you can apply for one under Weblio and request for an endorsement letter after training so you can open an account for free. You can use an existing BDO account as long as it is a Savings account.

When does Weblio send out payment?

The Weblio team sends tutor fees every 20th of the following month. The cut-off date is the end of each month. An example of a tutorial fee payment schedule is shown below:

As part of their legal obligations, Weblio  withholds 10% of the monthly tutor fees. It is remitted monthly to the BIR. Weblio won't file your taxes for you, but they can send you a BIR 2307 so you can do it yourself.

Can you teach at Weblio even if you don't have a degree?

Yes, you can as long as you are at least 18 years old and have met the requirements mentioned above. You don't need TEFL certification to apply at Weblio.

Think of a portfolio as your showcase room for displaying your work. It's a neat way of showing clients what you're capable of and if what you do matches their needs.

Anytime you pitch for a job, clients will almost always ask for samples anyway, so having something ready to show them makes things more convenient and gives off a professional vibe.

There are plenty of free online services for showing your portfolio if you want a more polished approach (versus simply sending them a link to a Google Drive/Dropbox folder of your work).

Even building a simple and free website could be a good idea especially if you have a lot of samples to show.

Quickly Build "Experience"

When I jumped into freelancing full time, I took a contributor job for a now-defunct Android-niche site.

I still had zero paying clients then, so I figured maybe my experience as a part time content writer almost a decade ago no longer holds its worth.

I needed to "freshen up" my experience so I could pitch better to clients.

So what I did was look for contributor positions at websites that feature topics I like.

During that time, I was keen on writing about tech so I ended up writing for free for a website about Android stuff mostly.

And while that looks like a losing position to be in, in reality, I was just spending an hour a day to write 1-2 news articles about stuff that interested me (each was just 350-500 words long).

In turn, I learned WordPress for free which I was able to make use of when I got hired as paid writer for another tech site (they needed someone with WordPress experience).

When I remember that moment, I can't help but recall a particular Steve Jobs' quote about "connecting the dots".

Create A Solid Profile

Build a strong online presence so that when potential clients try to check you out, they'll see that you're legit. A strong online presence is having a great profile on platforms like LinkedIn, UpWork, and other similar marketplaces.

If you did what I did (contributor work), include links to your published articles on your profile. Aside from the plus points you get for proving your work is good enough to be published, it will help give your potential client an idea of your writing style and quality of work.

Think of your online profile as some sort of personal billboard that helps you market your content writing business. It’s almost a must these days to have a LinkedIn account because clients all across the globe use it for hiring talent. If you have a solid LinkedIn portfolio, you’re giving yourself the advantage of “pre-promoting” yourself to clients.

The goal is not to earn money from the blog. Right now, it's a platform for showing your work. Later on, if you get more serious about running a blog, then you just need to make the necessary tweaks and add more content.  

Tips for Becoming a Better Content Writer

There's no doubt that a lot of people can write, but the key to becoming a good content writer is your ability to write well. That includes being able to absorb what you’ve read and then conceptualizing your learning and thoughts into clear writing that fits your article’s goal.

And while most would think that writing In general is an “artistic” endeavor, I personally view content writing as more of a puzzle building activity. I get facts and data about a subject, check out what’s already out there and look for ways to improve upon it (or present it in a fresh/different perspective), build a decent outline around it, then start plugging in the words to fill out that outline.

I work on different parts of the article at various times and days, depending on what I feel like completing first. It’s quite rare for me to be able to finish an article in one sitting.

In fact, much of my time and effort goes into the research part of it, rather than actually writing the article.

A content writer’s goal (at least in my opinion) is to take an assigned topic, cover all key points and supporting elements, then present it in a clear and engaging manner. And this applies to all topics I write. Whether I’m writing about “The Best Life Insurance for Seniors” or “How to be more productive”, I want the reader to clearly understand what they read and hopefully learn a thing or two from it.

Active voice

Writing in "active" voice gives your writing more energy. Done right, it will let you use fewer words (concise) and be more engaging. Unless your job actually requires that you present it in a very business-like format, strive to write in active form.

Present facts/data

Try to include data, stats, and/or studies in your writing. Backing up your article with related information and/or proof makes it more compelling and believable.

Read a lot

Exposing yourself to the works of others lets you soak up a lot of useful stuff: current events, expanding your vocabulary, information about your interests, style of writing, perspective, and more. Reading is an essential part of becoming a good writer. 

Have some type of note taking system (useful for referencing)

You'll come across a ton of useful stuff as you read. Things that you can use later in your own writing. Whether its stats, a cool quote, trivia, or anything that you think is worth referencing later, having a simple setup of collecting and storing them will be helpful in your work.

How to Be an ESL Teacher in 2021: 5 Things You Need to Know

As English is used by more than half of the world population, and especially in business — it’s no wonder that more people are learning it. According to Inquirer, there's an opportunity for 20,000 Filipinos to meet the increasing demand for English-language education in China. After all, the Philippines’ labor force is one huge sleeping giant in this industry.

But, how do you become an ESL teacher? Here are 5 things you should prepare for before applying as an ESL teacher. 

1. Brief resume

Here’s a practical tip, often ignored by applicants, make your resume short but substantial. Assess yourself and previous experiences if it’s related to being proficient in English. If not, spare the details. Make your resume appealing using free resume templates. Canva, a graphics design application, is perfect because you can make one amazing resume in under 5 minutes. And it’s free!

2. Self-introduction video or audio recording

The standard is a one-minute self-introduction. Here are a few things to consider before hitting that record button:

Read and follow the company's instructions or guidelines for the introduction, Take note that some companies would require a video recording.

Practice your introduction and make sure there are no mistakes in pronunciation and grammar. 

Look your best and be your best. 

Smile while recording your audio introduction. It makes you sound more friendly and approachable.

Be unique and add a little fun to your script. 

Apply this basic flow:

  • Greetings
  • Name
  • Hobbies and/or an interesting fact about yourself
  • Reason for teaching
  • Expectations from the class

As an ESL teacher, you must have the necessary skills -- excellent interpersonal communication skills, clear pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar skills. Also, time management is a skill you'll develop over time, as you get to familiarize yourself with your teaching flow. Further, basic troubleshooting skills on the application or gadgets are also required. 

Remember that the lesson activities should appeal to students' interests and goals. Make the class lively and motivating. In this field, patience goes a long way. Also, certificates are sometimes required by ESL companies. These certifications can be obtained by enrolling in online training courses.

Workplace area requirements and technical requirements

Most companies are strict when it comes to workplace requirements. Pick an area in your house that is quiet and clutter-free. You can be creative in your teaching space by using flashcards and pictures as background when you teach. The company logo is oftentimes placed as a background.

My Ultra-budget Work from Home (and Online School) Computer

I spent less than 7000 pesos for this tiny computer and it's been perfect for my WFH needs

Yup, that's not a typo. I paid just 6700 pesos for this cute, barely-larger-than-an-ashtray CPU that runs on a mere 12V adapter (imagine the power savings on this thing)

I've been using this ultra-budget desktop (UBD) setup as my main workhorse for almost 2 months now and all I can say is:

My Quick Review of the BMAX B2

The main reason I bought this was because my son (6 yrs old) keeps on borrowing my laptop to play games. I don't really mind but it can become a bit of a hassle at times when I'm furiously working and trying to beat a deadline.

I could switch to my trusty old Chromebook to finish the job but it kinda away my flow and momentum, sometimes becoming irritating even, because I'll have to open up all my tabs again and adjust to the smaller screen. Not good.

Also, prior to buying this tiny, tiny PC (mas mahaba pa cellphone ko), the mechanical hard drive on my laptop was starting to slow down — booting up took 1-2 mins, opening apps took forever, and you can just feel the general slowness of it all.

I started to hate using it for work. (Side note: I bought and installed an SSD to act as the main drive for my old laptop (where the OS and main apps are installed) and connected the old mechanical drive via caddy method for file storage. Now it feels so much snappy and I like using it again — but only when I feel like it).

Originally, I considered buying a second-hand CPU since I already have a monitor. I thought it will mainly serve as a secondary computer anyway so there was no reason to spend more for a new one.

However, I remembered seeing a mini-pc in Lazada a few months ago from the same store where I planned to get a cheap laptop for backup. I really dig the small form factor and thought it was the perfect pair for my monitor since I also didn't want a bulky CPU tower (I have a tiny desk).

Although a bit anxious buying from a store in China and with just around 4 reviews for the item when I bought it (all were 5 stars though), I pulled the trigger and ordered it. A week later, it arrived in a small non-descript box you wouldn't think there was a PC inside.

So without further ado, here are the specs of this tiny pc that could:

This little computer can easily manage my typical workload of Word, Dropbox (app), and a couple of Chrome tabs (6-8) running at the same time.

I checked Task Manager for some insight on how its handling resources and found that the CPU is usually running anywhere between 70% to 100% load almost all the time. But that's to be expected because it's a Celeron (cmon, man).

But it's not really an issue for me since the system felt snappy enough for my needs. Of course your mileage may vary, I'm speaking from the perspective of someone doing light tasks only (no gaming, video editing, or similar demanding stuff).

I went ahead and ran a couple of benchmarks to give those of you (who care for synthetic benchmarks) a better idea on its overall computing capabilities.

And btw, booting up is a dream. Maybe it's because I'm so used to the painstakingly slow pace of old mechanical hard drives that it still amazes me (at least until I get used to it) when I can start working in less than 20 seconds (partida may log-in pa yon).

Why you should buy the BMAX B2

Let's list down the pros and cons of owning a tiny computer like this one. Note that this is based on my own perspective and experience so take this with a grain of salt.

Its offers superb value for the price 

Have you tried checking desktop pc prices nowadays? Blame it on stores capitalizing on the pandemic (which resulted to more people working from home and kids doing school online), even refurbished models featuring dated processors and RAM (3 years and older generations) are now significantly pricier than they were last year.

And if you don't know much about PCs in general, you can get screwed fast. You'd think that Intel i5 CPU with 8GB of RAM and 500GB mech hard drive that you saw on FB marketplace is fairly-priced at 10k, until you realize it was a 2011 i5 release coupled with a slower DDR3 RAM. And don't even get me started on a used mechanical hard drive.

So you can end up paying more for a system that not only is relatively slow by today's standards, but also dead in the water in terms of upgrade path with parts that are potentially nearing their end-of-life.

Now I'm not saying there are no good deals for second-hand or refurbished items out there. There are definitely decent ones and even super-sulit deals.

My point here is that buying a PC can be tricky if you don't have much knowledge about it (myself included) and you can end up paying for more than what it's worth. When I saw the BMAX B2, I thought, "So for 6700, I'd have a fully-functional, space-saving, energy-efficient, desktop PC with legit Windows 10, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and Dual HDMI support? Plus, you can even add more storage (via m.2 SSD). How is that even possible? I mean, what's not to like?!

Now if I'm being honest, I would prefer a more traditional PC with a graphics card for better all-around performance (and gaming capability). But that can easily cost above 20k (without a monitor) and it misses that bang-for-your-buck value that the BMAX B2 provides. 

It was a no-brainer for me — as someone looking for an alternative workhorse to my laptop — the amount of functionality and features I'm getting from such a tiny and affordable device is simply amazing considering its price.

It's complete and ready to use

When I received the BMAX B2, I immediately plugged the HDMI cable from my monitor and booted the system up. I was able to connect to WIFI and use my Bluetooth mouse and keyboard. In minutes, I was working on my projects in Google Docs. I didn't have to buy a WiFi or Bluetooth dongle, install Windows, buy HDMI cables (it comes with one) or deal with any potential hassle that comes with setting up a new PC. It simply worked.

It's energy efficient

Having a low-powered CPU means it consumes significantly less power than the typical i3 (or AMD-equivalent) and higher-tiered processors. I bet my laptop (which has a video card) consumes more electricity than the BMAX. If you'll be using a computer for more than 8 hrs a day, everyday, then the power savings can be quite significant (versus a more powerful setup.)

It's just right for my needs

Would you really need to hire a truck to transport a dining table when an L300 van could accomplish the same thing --- at a cheaper price? Exactly. And I had the same mindset when I bought the BMAX B2 mini PC. Do I really need a full-pledged desktop PC for Google Docs and a couple of other Chrome tabs? Uhm, yeah — NO.

Remember, when buying something, context is key. Knowing what you'll be using the machine for is the most important thing to consider when buying a PC. And in my case, the workload doesn't demand much in terms of horsepower so the BMAX B2 is perfect.

It can be a great PC for online school

My 6-year old kid uses my HP Chromebook (with touchscreen) for his online schooling (they use Google Classroom). It's less powerful than the BMAX with its Celeron 3060 and 4GB of DDR3 memory (and a measly 16GB of hard drive storage). 

The experience has been nothing but smooth for him (considering its specs) and I bet the BMAX will easily beat it in terms of performance. If budget's really tight for online school, hook the BMAX B2 to your TV via HDMI, buy a decent web cam, and you'll have a full rig for less than 7k that manages online school workloads like a champ. It's super small

Man, I still can't believe that my main computer is just about the size of a typical platito (or ash tray). It even comes with a mounting set (screws and bracket) so you can mount it behind your monitor (with VESA support) for a really minimalist look. It's also very quiet and doesn't get hot at all. If you want that super-clean desktop style, you can't go wrong with this one.

Easy Smart TV. 

I have the BMAX hooked up to my main monitor (a 21.5 inch Benq) and our old 32-inch TV. When someone else is watching on our main TV, I turn on the BMAX and switch on the attached TV to watch Netflix or YouTube. Sometimes, I use both screens while working but the TV screen is mainly just for playing Netflix continuously (on mute) while I work (keeps me company till the wee hours of the morning) on my main monitor.

Why you shouldn't buy the BMAX B2

Syempre kahit maraming pros, meron pa ding cons. Here are a few scenarios I can think of where the BMax B2 wouldn't fit.

If you deal with medium to heavy workload 

If you'll be dealing with medium to heavy workload, skip this one. It's just not powerful enough for those tasks (editing video, graphics, etc.,)

If you want to use it for games

 Can't do it, sorry. Unless you're still into Plants vs Zombies or Bejeweled. Fun fact: I tried to run an old Need for Speed game (2010 title) and it was able to run it (surprisingly) at 25fps average (low settings).

If you're a heavy multi-tasker

If you have dozens of Chrome tabs and apps always open at the same time, you'll need a more powerful processor to switch between tasks without feeling the lag. While the BMAX's RAM is sufficient for that, the CPU will struggle. Since I hate staring at a boatload of tabs anyway it's not an issue for me (I keep things below 8 tabs max plus desktop apps).

I never intended to write an article about the BMAX B2. However, the more I use it, the more I felt the need to let others know about it. Why? Because it offers such a great value for its price. 

With more and more of our fellow kabayans needing a cost-effective computer for WFH and online school these days, I just felt compelled to let them know that such an option exists. Hopefully, they find this "guide" useful.
